Bible Commentaries on the Major Prophets
(Isaiah – Daniel)

The biblical books of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, and Daniel, also known as the Major Prophets, are an invaluable mine of spiritual truth, especially as regards the nature of God, His providence, the meaning of having a covenant with Him, and the character and purpose of the Messiah. Without the historical and cultural background and detailed analysis that you can only get from the commentaries, these mines might seem virtually closed to you. You will gain a great deal from a judicious selection of study aids in your attempts to "go deeper" in this part of the Word of God. As with commentaries on other parts of the Bible, you need to find a good match between your own needs and abilities and what your commentary provides, because they are all on different levels. Here and there I will add notes as I am able to help you along in your decision-making process. They are all bold and in this navy-blue color. —Steve

Isaiah 34-66, Revised, Word Biblical Commentary
By John D.W. Watts / Thomas Nelson / W

Dr. Watts has revisited this work he produced almost twenty years ago, updating it in light of current scholarship. He continues to hold to the unity of Isaiah, rather than ascribing it to two or three composers or schools, even though the work ranges over three crucial centuries of Israel's history. In this second WBC volume on Isaiah, he continues to focus on the central figure of Yahweh and to examine the changing roles played by Israel, Jerusalem, Assyria, Babylon, and Persia. He carefully examines the language, form, theological content, and scriptural parallels of the book. The Word Biblical Commentary series provides an exceptional resource for the professional theologian and instructor, the seminary or university student, the working minister, and everyone concerned with building theological understanding from a solid base of biblical scholarship.

Jeremiah/Lamentations

Abindgon Old Testament Commentary: Jeremiah
By Louis Stulman / Abingdon Press

Jeremiah has a reputation for being one of the most difficult books in the Bible to read. Despite its dense and jumbled appearance, Louis Stulman shows that Jeremiah is an artistic and symbolic tapestry held together by prose seams. Stulman explains how the prophetic book re-enacts the dismantling of Israel's most cherished social and symbolic systems. In doing so it speaks poignantly of the horrors of war and military occupation, as well as the resultant despair and anger.

The Abingdon Old Testament Commentaries provide compact, critical commentaries on the books of the Old Testament for the use of theological students and pastors. The commentaries are also useful for upper-level college or university students and for those responsible for teaching in congregational settings.

31419: Lamentations, Interpretation Commentary

Lamentations, Interpretation Commentary
By F.W. Dobbs-Allsopp / Westminster / John Knox

The destruction of Jerusalem in 586 B.C., which led to the exile of the people of Israel, drastically changed the community's life. In the midst of this darkness, the five poems collected as the biblical book of Lamentations emerged as a life-embracing work. This sophisticated yet accessible commentary now makes the message of Lamentations come alive for Christian existence today. The distinctiveness of the Palestinian voice found in these poems is maintained as they bear witness to the horror and pain of human suffering. Yet, beneath the words, a determined will to live emerges and confronts human suffering, probes God and God's actions, and anticipates a new kind of human community that will arise from Zion, even in the midst of God's silence. 02282: Ezekiel 20-48, Word Biblical Commentary

Ezekiel 20-48, Word Biblical Commentary
By Leslie Allen / Thomas Nelson / W

God was always faithful in honoring his covenant with Israel. But when the chosen people repeatedly forgot that covenant, they experienced divine chastening, especially through the fall of Jerusalem. The prophet Ezekiel was God's messenger to a generation born in exile, after Jerusalem's fall in 587 B.C., to a people brought low by the burden of sin. But what began as a stern pronouncement of judgment soon climaxed in a joyous prediction of salvation. Dr. Leslie C. Allen's commentary on the last half of the Book of Ezekiel (chapters 20-48) captures the spirit of those times as it portrays Ezekiel the prophet as a watchman, a foreseer of the millennium, and as perhaps the most sophisticated of the biblical prophets. Allen's research also scrutinizes Ezekiel's priestly training, as evidenced in the book's precise, structured, and chronological format. Leslie Allen is professor of Old Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary. He has the Ph.D. from the University College of London.

The Preacher's Commentary Vole 21: Daniel
By Sinclair B. Ferguson / Thomas Nelson / W

84210: Abingdon Old Testament Commentary: Daniel

Abingdon Old Testament Commentary: Daniel
By Donald E. Gowan / Abingdon Press

Daniel - one of the most misused books of the Bible - is read in this commentary as a powerful message concerning hope and responsibility for believers who, for various reasons, have to face the theological question, "Who's in charge here?" The book of Daniel insists that the God of Israel is in charge, in spite of what circumstances may indicate; then finds ways, through story and vision, to reassure the faithful that there is a future for them after all.

The commentary shows that what might be taken as just "Sunday school stories" - the lion's den and the fiery furnace - do raise issues from real life that have faced believers time and again across the centuries. It also helps readers to understand how to read Daniel's predictions of the future in a way that is most faithful to scripture as a whole.

Leberach sees in Daniel a persistent call to endurance and loyalty to God, even while believers suffer for their faith, pray for deliverance, and speak truth to kings. [TOP]
